Destination Wedding: Where to start?

Updated: Nov 19

You've decided you'd like to have a Destination Wedding in Italy. Now what?

When planning a Wedding abroad, it is hard to figure out where to start; there are so many choices to take, starting from the city, and considering a lot of different factors such as airports, accommodations for guests and more.

It is a lot more to think about compared to an hometown wedding, but we promise it'll be worth it, you and your guests will share amazing and unforgettable memories - but, if you've already been a destination wedding guest, you already know that.

While our focus is on Italian Destination Weddings, this post in particular is applicable to most Destination Weddings around the world - usually this is how the industry works, with some exceptions. So, feel free to share with Destination Weddings Spouses around the globe!

1. Do I choose the Wedding Planner or the Venue first?

First of all, none of this. The first thing you need to consider is: 1. Airports

2. Location Think about the average age of your guests (more younger or older?), and how many layovers or car drives they can handle. Go online and check for well-connected airports from the cities your guests are traveling from. This will help you pin down 2 or 3 areas of your interest, so now you can start looking for your venue.

2. Choosing the Venue before the Wedding Planner

Unless you have a well-trusted referral or direct experience with a wedding planner, our unpopular suggestion is not to book this type of service before choosing your venue. Why?

  1. Because a lot of venues have their trusted ones. You might think that you'd like an 'unbinded' one, but unless you are planning a really high budget wedding with multiple locations, usually the most efficient way to go is with the ones that work for/with the venue or suggested by them: they'll know everything about the place (and know what are the things to avoid) and usually they live in the area and you won't have to pay extra for her transfer.

  2. Even if you don't go with the venue-suggested planners, once you chose the location is easier to find local planners that consequentially know well local vendors. Distances in Italy are perceived different that in the U.S. or other countries, what you think might be close is usually in an entirely different region and you'll have to pay extra fee for transfer!

  1. Ask yourself this question

When planning your wedding, it's easy to get caught up in the details and feel like every aspect must be perfect. But: not everything needs to be a splurge! The key to saving money on your wedding is knowing what matters most to you and cutting costs where it doesn’t. To discover the magic question that will help you pin down your non-negotiables, don't miss this guide!
